How To Deal With Severe TMJ Pain

How Long Does Tmj LastWhat Is Tmj Jaw

To figure out what’s causing yours, the dentist will ask about your health history and conduct a physical exam. They’ll check your jaw joints for pain or tenderness and listen for clicks, pops, or grating sounds when you move them (how to treat tmj). They’ll also make sure your jaw works like it should and doesn’t lock when you open or close your mouth.

What Causes Tmj Clicking

Your dentist may take full face X-rays so they can view your jaws, temporomandibular joints, and teeth to rule out other problems (how to cure tmj permanently). They may need to do other tests, like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computer tomography (CT). The MRI can show if the TMJ disc is in the proper position as your jaw moves.

You may get referred to an oral surgeon (also called an oral and maxillofacial surgeon) for further care and treatment. This doctor specializes in surgery in and around the entire face, mouth, and jaw area. You may also see an orthodontist to ensure your teeth, muscles, and joints work like they should.

What Is Tmj And How Is It Treated

Your doctor may suggest you try some of these remedies together. Take over-the-counter medications. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like naproxen or ibuprofen, can relieve muscle pain and swelling. Use moist heat or cold packs. Apply an ice pack to the side of your face and temple area for about 10 minutes.

When you’re done, hold a warm towel or washcloth to the side of your face for about 5 minutes. Perform this routine a few times each day (what causes tmj). Eat soft foods. Add yogurt, mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, soup, scrambled eggs, fish, cooked fruits and vegetables, beans, and grains to your menu.

Skip hard, crunchy foods (like pretzels and raw carrots), chewy foods (like caramels and taffy), and thick or large bites that require you to open wide. Avoid extreme jaw movements. Keep yawning and chewing (especially gum or ice) to a minimum and don’t yell, sing, or do anything that forces you to open wide.

How Long Does Tmj Ear Pain Last

How To Correct TmjDon’t hold the phone between your shoulder and ear. Practice good posture to reduce neck and facial pain. Keep your teeth slightly apart as often as you can. This will relieve pressure on your jaw - how do you fix tmj. Put your tongue between your teeth to control clenching or grinding during the day. Learn relaxation techniques to help loosen up your jaw.

Consider stress reduction therapy as well as biofeedback. Talk to your dentist about these tried-and-true treatments for TMD: Medications. Your dentist can prescribe higher doses of NSAIDs if you need them for pain and swelling. They might suggest a muscle relaxer to relax your jaw if you grind or clench your teeth.

In low doses they can also help reduce or control pain. Muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety drugs, and antidepressants are available by prescription only. A splint or night guard. These plastic mouthpieces fit over your upper and lower teeth so they don’t touch. They lessen the effects of clenching or grinding and correct your bite by putting your teeth in a more correct position (what is tmj?).

What Causes Tmj To Flare Up

You use a splint all the time. Your dentist will tell you which type you need. Dental work. Your dentist can replace missing teeth and use crowns, bridges, or braces to balance the biting surfaces of your teeth or to correct a bite problem. If the treatments listed above don’t help, your dentist may suggest one or more of the following: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).

It can be done at the dentist's office or at home. Ultrasound. Deep heat applied to the joint can relieve soreness or improve mobility. Trigger-point injections. Pain medication or anesthesia is injected into tender facial muscles called "trigger points" to give relief. Radio wave therapy. Radio waves stimulate the joint, which increases blood flow and eases pain.

This lowers pain and inflammation and helps you move your neck more freely and open your mouth wider. If other treatments can’t help you, surgery is an option. Once it’s done, it can’t be undone, so get a second or even third opinion from other dentists. There are three types of surgery for TMD.

What Are The Symptoms Of Tmj

Arthrocentesis is used if you have no major history of TMJ but your jaws are locked. It’s a minor procedure that your dentist can do in their office. They’ll give you general anesthesia, then insert needles into the joint and wash it out. They may use a special tool to get rid of damaged tissue or dislodge a disc stuck in the joint, or to unstick the joint itself.

This type of surgery, known as minimally invasive, leaves a smaller scar, has fewer complications, and requires a shorter recovery time than a major operation. Open-joint surgery. Depending on the cause of the TMD, arthroscopy may not be possible. You may need this type of surgery if: The bony structures in your jaw joint are wearing down You have tumors in or around the joint Your joint is scarred or full of bone chips You’ll get general anesthesia, then the doctor will open up the entire area around the joint so they can get a full view and better access.

Understanding TMJYou may not think about your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) much, but you use them a lot. The joints connect your jawbone to your skull. Your TMJ springs into action each time you talk, chew, and swallow. TMJ disorders occur when something goes wrong with your jaw joints and jaw muscles.

How To Relieve Tmj Pain

TMJ disorders may cause mild to debilitating symptoms, such as:It’s unclear exactly how TMJ exercises may relieve pain. They’re thought to help:strengthen jaw musclesstretch the jawrelax the jawincrease jaw mobilityreduce jaw clickingpromote jaw healingAccording to one 2010 study published in the Journal of Dental Research, performing TMJ exercises increases mouth opening range more than using a mouth guard in people with TMJ disc displacement.

For some exercises, there are frequency recommendations. For exercises where frequency recommendations aren’t available, ask your doctor or dentist for guidance. Rest your tongue gently on the top of your mouth behind your upper front teeth. Allow your teeth to come apart while relaxing your jaw muscles. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth and one finger in front of your ear where your TMJ is located.

Drop your lower jaw halfway and then close. There should be mild resistance but not pain. A variation of this exercise is to place one finger on each TMJ as you drop your lower jaw halfway and closed again. Do this exercise six times in one set. You should do one set six times daily.

What Is Tmj Stand For

Drop your lower jaw completely and back. For a variation of this exercise, place one finger on each TMJ as you completely drop your lower jaw and back. Do this exercise six times to complete one set. You should complete one set six times daily. With your shoulders back and chest up, pull your chin straight back, creating a “double chin.” Hold for three seconds and repeat 10 times.

Open your mouth slowly, pushing gently against your chin for resistance. Hold for three to six seconds, and then close your mouth slowly. Squeeze your chin with your index and thumb with one hand. Close your mouth as you place gently pressure on your chin. This will help strengthen your muscles that help you chew.

Put a ¼ inch object, such as stacked tongue depressors, between your front teeth, and slowly move your jaw from side to side (what does tmj stand for). As the exercise becomes easier, increase the thickness of the object between your teeth by stacking them one on top of each other. Put a ¼ inch object between your front teeth.

What Is Tmj Syndrome

The temporomandibular joints are complex structures containing muscles, tendons, and bones. Injury to or disorders of these structures can all result in pain in the jaw area. Jaw pain may occur on one side or on both sides, depending upon the cause. Also depending upon the exact cause, the pain may occur when chewing or may occur at rest.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome is a disorder of the jaw muscles and nerves caused by injury or inflammation to the temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joint is the connection between the jawbone and the skull. The injured or inflamed temporomandibular joint leads to pain with chewing, clicking, crackling, and popping of the jaw; swelling on the sides of the face; nerve inflammation; headaches, including migraines; tooth grinding (bruxism); Eustachian tube dysfunction; and sometimes dislocation of the temporomandibular joint.

Tmj What Is It

What Does Tmj Stand ForHow Long Does Tmj Pain Last

There are several risk factors for TMD:Poor posture in the neck and upper back muscles may lead to neck strain and abnormalities of jaw muscle function. Stress may increase muscle tension and jaw clenching (how to cure tmj permanently). Women 18-44 years of age have increased risk. Patients with other chronic inflammatory arthritis have increased risk.

People who have a genetic predisposition to pain sensitivity and increased stress responses may be more susceptible. Source: iStock Medical professionals do no completely understand the causes of TMD. Multiple factors contribute to the muscle tightness and dysfunction that characterize this condition. It is not clear whether some of these causes directly lead to TMJ syndrome or if they are a result of the disorder.

How Does Tmj Affect Your Ears

The main TMD symptom is pain in the jaw joint. This joint is located just in front of the ear, and pain associated with TMD may involve the face, eye, forehead, ear, or neck. Signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction include the following:Pain or tenderness in the jaw, especially at the area of the jointPopping/clicking of the jaw (crepitus)Pain that feels like a toothacheEar pain (earache) or sounds of cracking in the earsRinging or popping sounds in the ears (tinnitus) or a sense of fullness in the earsHeadaches, including migrainesTight, stiff, or sore jaw or neck musclesMuscle spasms in the jawFacial pain, mouth pain, jaw pain, cheek pain, or chin numbness or tinglingPain at the base of the tonguePain, swelling, or a lump in the temple areaDifficulty chewingLocking or dislocation of the jaw (usually after widely yawning), referred to as lockjawDizziness or vertigo Source: Bigstock A doctor will diagnose TMD by taking the patient's medical history and doing a physical exam to find the cause of the symptoms.

A doctor may send the patient to an oral and maxillofacial specialist, an otolaryngologist (also called an ear, nose, and throat doctor or ENT specialist), or a dentist specializing in jaw disorders to confirm the diagnosis. Sometimes a health care professional may order an MRI of the temporomandibular joint to detect damage to the cartilage of the jaw joint and to rule out other medical problems.

What Is Tmj?

The trigeminal nerve supplies nerve impulses to the temporomandibular joint, and when irritated, it can cause facial pain (what causes tmj). Other causes of face or neck pain include swollen lymph nodes (swollen glands), giant cell arteritis, salivary gland disease, sore throat, ill-fitting dentures, or dental braces. Source: Getty Images Many symptoms of TMJ disorders can respond well to home remedies or stress reduction and relaxation techniques.

Most of these types of treatments and remedies will not cure TMD, but they can provide temporary and even long-term relief from the pain symptoms. These most common treatments include the following:A dental splint (occlusal splint or stabilization splint or bite guard), which is a dental appliance placed in the mouth that keeps the teeth in alignment and prevents tooth grinding.

How Do You Get Tmj

What Is Tmj PainA medical professional may use Botox to relax the muscles of the jaw. However, this is not currently an FDA-approved treatment for TMD.Physical therapy with jaw exercises can strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and range of motion. In states where medical marijuana is legal, a physician may prescribe it to help with severe TMJ pain.

Trigger point acupuncture can sometimes be helpful. In severe cases, surgery on the jaw or dental surgery may be necessary. TMJ arthroscopy or arthrocentesis is a minimally invasive procedure usually done in an outpatient setting. The recovery time for this procedure is about a week. Sometimes a total joint replacement may be necessary.

What Is Tmj?

The following prescription-strength medicines may be used to treat TMJ:Muscle relaxants: metaxalone (Skelaxin), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril)Anti-inflammatory drugs: nabumetone (Relafen), meloxicam (Mobic), celecoxib (Celebrex)Steroid injections: beclomethasone (Qvar)Tricyclic antidepressants: nortriptyline (Pamelor), amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep), and desipramine (Norpramin), imipramine (Norfranil, Tipramine, Tofranil)Benzodiazapines: diazepam (Valium), clonazepam (Klonopin), alprazolam (Xanax)Sleep medications: doxepin (Silenor)Nerve pain medications: gabapentin (Neurontin), topiramate (Topamax), levetiracetam (Keppra), pregabalin (Lyrica)Opiate pain medications hydrocodone and acetaminophen (Vicodin, Lortab), oxycodone and acetaminophen (Percocet) Source: iStock A primary care provider (PCP), such as a family practitioner, internist, or a child's pediatrician, may first diagnose your TMJ.

You may also see a pain-management specialist if your TMJ pain is severe. The prognosis for TMJ syndrome is generally good. There are numerous causes for TMJ syndrome, so the outlook depends on the cause, if known. Most people can manage the discomfort with self-care and home remedies. Complications of long-term TMJ syndrome include chronic face pain or chronic headaches.

What Doctor Treats Tmj

Symptoms of TMJ syndrome tend to be episodic and related to stress and lifestyle.Prevention of TMJ syndrome symptoms can often be achieved using self-care at home, such aseating soft foods;avoiding chewing gum;maintaining proper posture;practicing stress reduction and relaxation techniques;using dental splint appliances as recommended by a jaw care professional;using proper safety equipment to prevent jaw fractures and dislocations while exercising, working, or participating in sports - how to treat tmj.

Who Do I See For Tmj

Your temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, which are in front of each ear. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side, so you can talk, chew, and yawn.

What Causes Tmj Pain

It's a problem with your TM joint, which connects your lower jaw to your skull. You might feel: Pain in or around your ears. Trouble opening your mouth wide. Jaw or neck pain. Even ringing in the ears. What's causing it? Grinding your teeth. Clenching your jaw. Stress. Poor posture.

An injury. Women get it more than men. Doctors don't know why. Think you have it? Ask your dentist or doctor. Problems with your jaw and the muscles in your face that control it are known as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). But you may hear it wrongly called TMJ, after the joint.

How To Fix Tmj Pain

Dentists believe symptoms arise from problems with the muscles of your jaw or with the parts of the joint itself. Injury to your jaw, the joint, or the muscles of your head and neck -- like from a heavy blow or whiplash -- can lead to TMD - how to cure tmj permanently. Other causes include: Grinding or clenching your teeth, which puts a lot of pressure on the jointMovement of the soft cushion or disc between the ball and socket of the jointArthritis in the jointStress, which can cause you to tighten facial and jaw muscles or clench the teeth TMD often causes severe pain and discomfort.

It might affect one or both sides of your face. More women than men have it, and it’s most common among people between the ages of 20 and 40. Common symptoms include: Pain or tenderness in your face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide Problems when you try to open your mouth wide Jaws that get "stuck" or "lock" in the open- or closed-mouth position Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth or chew.

How To Treat TMJ

Your doctor or dentist will discuss your symptoms and examine your jaw. He or she will probably: Listen to and feel your jaw when you open and close your mouth Observe the range of motion in your jaw Press on areas around your jaw to identify sites of pain or discomfort If your doctor or dentist suspects a problem, you may need: Dental X-rays to examine your teeth and jaw CT scan to provide detailed images of the bones involved in the joint MRI to reveal problems with the joint's disk or surrounding soft tissue TMJ arthroscopy is sometimes used in the diagnosis of a TMJ disorder (how to treat tmj).

Show more related information In some cases, the symptoms of TMJ disorders may go away without treatment. If your symptoms persist, your doctor may recommend a variety of treatment options, often more than one to be done at the same time. Along with other nonsurgical treatments, these medication options may help relieve the pain associated with TMJ disorders: If over-the-counter pain medications aren't enough to relieve TMJ pain, your doctor or dentist may prescribe stronger pain relievers for a limited time, such as prescription strength ibuprofen.

These types of drugs are sometimes used for a few days or weeks to help relieve pain caused by TMJ disorders created by muscle spasms. Nondrug therapies for TMJ disorders include: Often, people with jaw pain will benefit from wearing a soft or firm device inserted over their teeth, but the reasons why these devices are beneficial are not well-understood - what kind of doctor treats tmj.

Education and counseling can help you understand the factors and behaviors that may aggravate your pain, so you can avoid them. Examples include teeth clenching or grinding, leaning on your chin, or biting fingernails. When other methods don't help, your doctor might suggest procedures such as: Arthrocentesis (ahr-throe-sen-TEE-sis) is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the insertion of small needles into the joint so that fluid can be irrigated through the joint to remove debris and inflammatory byproducts.

Infrequently, injecting botulinum toxin type A (Botox, others) into the jaw muscles used for chewing may relieve pain associated with TMJ disorders. In some cases, arthroscopic surgery can be as effective for treating various types of TMJ disorders as open-joint surgery. A small thin tube (cannula) is placed into the joint space, an arthroscope is then inserted and small surgical instruments are used for surgery.

How Long Does Tmj Ear Pain Last

Modified condylotomy (kon-dih-LOT-uh-mee) addresses the TMJ indirectly, with surgery on the mandible, but not in the joint itself. It may be helpful for treatment of pain and if locking is experienced - how long does tmj ear pain last. If your jaw pain does not resolve with more-conservative treatments and it appears to be caused by a structural problem in the joint, your doctor or dentist may suggest open-joint surgery (arthrotomy) to repair or replace the joint (how to treat tmj).

If your doctor recommends surgery or other procedures, be sure to discuss the potential benefits and risks, and ask what all your options are. Becoming more aware of tension-related habits — clenching your jaw, grinding your teeth or chewing pencils — will help you reduce their frequency. The following tips may help you reduce symptoms of TMJ disorders: Eat soft foods.

Steer clear of sticky or chewy food. Avoid chewing gum. Your doctor, dentist or physical therapist may show you how to do exercises that stretch and strengthen your jaw muscles and how to massage the muscles yourself. Applying warm, moist heat or ice to the side of your face may help alleviate pain.

Examples include: A specialist trained in acupuncture treats chronic pain by inserting hair-thin needles at specific locations on your body. Consciously slowing your breathing and taking deep, regular breaths can help relax tense muscles, which can reduce pain. Electronic devices that monitor the tightness of specific muscles can help you practice effective relaxation techniques.

What Are Symptoms Of TmjWhat Is A Tmj Specialist

If suggested treatments don't provide enough relief, you may be referred to a doctor who specializes in TMJ disorders. You may want to prepare a list that answers the following questions: When did your symptoms begin? Have you ever had this occur in the past? Has your level of stress increased recently? Do you have frequent headaches, neck aches or toothaches? What medications and supplements do you take regularly? Your doctor may ask some of the following questions: Is your pain constant or do your symptoms come and go? Does any activity seem to trigger the pain? Does your jaw click or pop when you move it? Is that clicking painful? Is it difficult to open your mouth normally? Your doctor or dentist will ask additional questions based on your responses, symptoms and needs.

What Is Tmj Syndrome

The temporomandibular (tem-puh-roe-man-DIB-u-lur) joint (TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. You have one joint on each side of your jaw. TMJ disorders — a type of temporomandibular disorder or TMD — can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement.

Your pain may be due to a combination of factors, such as genetics, arthritis or jaw injury. Some people who have jaw pain also tend to clench or grind their teeth (bruxism), although many people habitually clench or grind their teeth and never develop TMJ disorders. In most cases, the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders is temporary and can be relieved with self-managed care or nonsurgical treatments.

Show more products from Mayo Clinic Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include: Pain or tenderness of your jaw Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints Aching pain in and around your ear Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing Aching facial pain Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth TMJ disorders can also cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when you open your mouth or chew.

Seek medical attention if you have persistent pain or tenderness in your jaw, or if you can't open or close your jaw completely. Your doctor, your dentist or a TMJ specialist can discuss possible causes and treatments for your problem. The temporomandibular joint combines a hinge action with sliding motions.

Painful TMJ disorders can occur if: The disk erodes or moves out of its proper alignment The joint's cartilage is damaged by arthritis The joint is damaged by a blow or other impact In many cases, however, the cause of TMJ disorders isn't clear. Factors that may increase the risk of developing TMJ disorders include: Various types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis Jaw injury Long-term (chronic) grinding or clenching of teeth Certain connective tissue diseases that cause problems that may affect the temporomandibular joint Dec.

How Much For Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dentistry is a growing field, and more and more adult professionals in Memphis are looking for ways to enhance their smile. There are many cosmetic dentistry procedures, ranging from dental implants to teeth whitening (dental cosmetic dentistry). If you are interested in a cosmetic dentistry procedure in the Memphis area, please contact Scott Edwards, DDS to schedule a free consultation now! (click to learn more about each of these specific services) Cosmetic dentistry has evolved from simply replacing and restoring damaged teeth to covering a wide scope of aesthetic procedures.

You may be surprised by how dentistry has evolved and what can be done by an experienced cosmetic dentist here in Memphis. Have an honest discussion with your Memphis dentist about your cosmetic goals to be sure they're realistic. Then discuss the risks, benefits, and alternatives to the recommended procedures.

AACD also strongly encourages that cosmetic dentistry integrate interdisciplinary medical and dental treatment to enhance outcomes and minimize the loss of healthy human tissue. That means AACD member dentists champion and provide minimally invasive treatment protocols, when and where appropriate, ensure they are consistent with the long-term health and needs of the patient (cosmetic surgery dentistry).

What Does General Dentistry Mean

Patients who have undergone treatment are often transformed from the inside out because knowledge in the dental profession for American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) members is constantly growing. That commitment to education has led AACD members to believe that responsible aesthetics means dealing with beauty that's more than skin-deep (cosmetic dentistry treatments).

Our convenient take home system can be used during the day or night and yields maximum results in about 10 to 14 days. A crown is a protective covering that is bonded or cemented onto your tooth. It is custom made in a dental laboratory by highly qualified technicians using ceramics, noble alloys or a combination of both.

A bridge is simply 3 or more crowns linked together. A bridge is recommended to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Crowns and bridges are quality restorations and are an excellent investment in your long-term dental health.

Veneers are an excellent remedy for chipped, cracked, spaced, stained or misaligned teeth. Dramatic results can be achieved in as few as 2 appointments. Veneers are considered long-term restorations that strengthen, protect and enhance the beauty of your smile (dentist and cosmetic). This involves taking action to prevent a condition from developing or worsening.

Having your teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis is one of the easiest ways of practicing preventive dentistry. Our hygienist will custom recommend a schedule of appointments and home care regimen designed to prevent the advance of gum disease and preserve your healthy smile for years to come. All aspects of dental care prescribed in this office are based in prevention.

The loss of several teeth can result in the inability to chew and speak effectively. It can also lead to the collapse of your bite causing stress on your jaw joints, facial muscles and a reduction in the vertical dimension of your face. This can create an older facial appearance with noticeable facial lines.

Cosmetic dentistry usually follows along the lines of symmetry and harmony. Certainly brightening teeth is something most people desire, removing stains (coffee, cigarettes). Everyone would like to be proud of their smile and show it off, but most do not because of gaps in their teeth, yellow teeth, uneven gums, missing teeth, etc.

Beauty is perception (in the eyes of the beholder). Many people believe that beautiful people are more intelligent and trustworthy. Some studies determined more attractive people are more likely to be employed and at a better salary. As a result, many people pursue ways to create a better smile. Your dentist drills out the tooth decay and applies the composite onto the tooth’s surface, then “sculpts” it into the right shape before curing it with a high-intensity light. Composite bonding (or bonding) effectively covers tooth damage while restoring the appearance of the original tooth. Often, bonding even improves the look of the original tooth or teeth! Compared to many other cosmetic procedures, bonding is inexpensive, making it an economical and effective treatment for patients with decay, chipped or cracked teeth or worn-down tooth edges.

Frequently, veneers and real teeth remain indistinguishable from each other. Additionally, dentists rely on veneers many cosmetic problems, including crooked teeth, damaged or cracked enamel, and unsightly gaps between teeth. Dentists apply veneers to the front of each tooth using a dental adhesive. Teeth whitening remains one of the best-known and simplest forms of cosmetic dentistry.

What Are Fake Teeth Called

Professional teeth whitening or teeth bleaching takes place in your dentist’s office, after your dentist first ensures that no plaque, tartar, or other debris are present. Plus, properly applied bleach lightens teeth to shades even lighter than those of the original teeth! People can use teeth whitening products from the drug store, but most effectively and fast is to have it done professionally in your dentist’s office.

What Does a Cosmetic Dentist Do?

Cosmetic dentistry is concerned with the appearance of teeth and the enhancement of a person's smile. In this field, the emphasis is on the art of dentistry, not just the science. On the surface, creating white teeth, or even whole new teeth in general, may not appear to be that complicated.

Beyond that, the dentist must be able to communicate his or her vision to a laboratory technician — a key player in the realization of any smile makeover. Though cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized specialty within the dental profession, it takes years of extensive study and training to be able to perform the many cosmetic dental procedures now available to the highest standards.

Cosmetic dentists are usually affiliated with a professional organization that provides continuing education and levels of accreditation to verify outstanding achievement in the study of cosmetic dentistry. While there is some overlap between the two fields (both may utilize implants and crowns, for example), the focus is different, as is the level of expertise.

This involves a high level of finesse with even the smallest details, such as how much tooth should be displayed in a particular smile. You can expect your dentist to ask you to describe in detail what you like and dislike about your smile, and what you want to change.

Because aesthetic problems such as missing or discolored teeth can also point to underlying health issues, a comprehensive oral exam is a must. Once your dentist has a thorough understanding of where you are starting from and where you want to end up, he or she can explain your treatment options (including how much they will cost and how long they will take to implement) and plan a course of action.

Some can also restore function and/or improve oral health as well. Cosmetic dentistry treatments include: — A relatively inexpensive way to brighten your smile, whitening teeth can be accomplished at home or in the dentist's chair. — A missing tooth can be replaced with porcelain bridgework that is attached to the natural teeth on either side of the space - dentist and cosmetic. — Usually made of titanium, an implant is used to replace the root portion of a missing tooth. The implant is fitted with a crown to create a natural-looking replacement for the entire tooth (cosmetics for teeth).
